Our Lapsang Souchong Butterfly Tea (正山小種蝶茶) is a classic Chinese "Smokey Tea" from China's Wuyi Mountains. "Butterfly grade" refers to leaves that come from the very top of the plant and just the leaf bud and very young leaves are picked.
The story behind how this "smokey tea" came into being, says that the tea was created accidentally in 1645, when to avoid advancing Qing Soldiers, villagers quickly dried freshly plucked tea leaves over a fire to dry them before burying them. When they returned the leaves were sold to Dutch traders who requested more.
Although it can be a required taste, this is wonderful smooth and crisp tasting tea that produces an amazing aroma of smokey pine fires.
